ChatGPT is creating quite a buzz in the tech world today! With the invention of AI, producing content has become just a matter of minutes- whether it’s an article, copy, or email. But, with rising demand in ChatGPT also comes a doubt. Does it produce unique content? Is ChatGPT plagiarism-free?
In this article, we will tackle a few important questions that take us to the perfect answer to this question. We will get a clear-cut conclusion to our question by experimenting with sample data on various plagiarism detectors. Let’s get the ball rolling.
Does ChatGPT Plagiarize?
ChatGPT doesn’t plagiarize any content. ChatGPT employs specific technology to curate answers by referring to tons of data. Since it is not allowed to access every site or give updates on the latest trends and statistics, it only refers to the data required and creates its own answer.
What Does It Mean?
- ChatGPT doesn’t copy or paste any content from another source
- It doesn’t paraphrase any text from other sites.
- It doesn’t copy data, text, ideas, or images.
It produces unique responses extracted from different resources in the database. However, some ideas resemble ideas from other sites. But it doesn’t copy from other author’s resources explicitly or implicitly.
To confirm this result, I took a sample of data from ChatGPT and tested it on various plagiarism checker tools. The next section describes what tool I’m using, the results I’ve got, and the conclusion derived from it.

Is ChatGPT Really Plagiarism-Free? (MY TESTS)
As Jeremy Stoppelman says, “You want experimentation. Every once in a while, you stumble upon something that blows your mind.” To get the answer to the above question, I took a piece of sample content from ChatGPT and tested its plagiarism score in various plagiarism tester tools. This score gives me an idea as to what fraction of ChatGPT-generated content is unique.
The tools I used for checking plagiarism are
- Grammarly Plagiarism checker
- Quetext
- DupliChecker
- Copyscape

Grammarly Plagiarism Checker
Grammarly is the most famous tool for checking spelling and grammar today! As part of the experiment, I copied the sample topic ‘data analysis’ content into the Grammarly tool.
But, we also should take the accuracy of the tool into account. No AI models give accurate results, as there are chances of getting false positive results. Therefore, a text below 15% plagiarism in the Grammarly tool can be considered.
OUR RESULTS
When I tested the sample, the tools showed me 8% plagiarism for a sample content of 266 words. The plagiarized content was mainly a few words from other sites.
In other words, ChatGPT didn’t copy any whole sentences but a fraction of words that answered the prompt in a standard way!
In conclusion, ChatGPT content was plagiarized to a minimal extent with the Grammarly tool by using minor words.
Quetext
Quetext is a reliable and free plagiarism checker tool widely used in the market. It also has a paid version of the tool for advanced features. Regarding the tool’s accuracy, Quetext is tried and tested by many people worldwide. Therefore, the results given by Quetext are pretty accurate.
OUR RESULTS
For my experiment, I have used the free version. The results are shown below. The plagiarism detected from a sample of ChatGPT content is 32%.
There’s a paradox here. A whopping 32%? There is a reason for this high score showing in Quetext. Since ChatGPT is an AI model, people across the world are using the content of ChatGPT as an exact verbatim.
And since every topic we put as a prompt in the ChatGPT might have some standard definitions, rules, and facts that could be used verbatim. And that clearly justifies the plagiarism of the ChatGPT content.
Duplichecker
Duplichecker is a valuable tool for plagiarism detection. It’s a free tool used by many people in the world. But as good as it sounds, Duplichecker isn’t very good at the accuracy of its results. The accuracy of the Duplichecker is questioned often, but we can consider the majority of the content.
OUR RESULTS
When my sample content was checked for plagiarism accuracy in Duplichecker, I got 0% plagiarism. That was a skeptical result from Duplichecker. All the other tools showed a small percentage of accuracy!
Copyscape
Copyscape is a popular plagiarism tool in the market that detects plagiarism. It is on the top 10 best lists among plagiarism tools. There is a free and paid version of the tool with advanced features. The Copyscape tool gives nearly accurate results with plagiarism.
OUR RESULTS
My sample content was checked with a Copyscape plagiarism detector, and the results showed 0% plagiarism. This result was the same as the Duplichecker precision.
I got 3 different results with 4 different tools. Therefore, we can average the results to draw a diplomatic conclusion.
ChatGPT Plagiarism Score: How Much Do I Rate?
The results obtained from all the tools claimed that there is some percentage of plagiarism found in the ChatGPT content. This is because, even though ChatGPT uses NLP (Natural Language Processing) that produces human-like content, it uses certain words and phrases that are standard to define the topic or even from a site. Therefore, plagiarism tools consider these words or certain standard definitions as ‘plagiarized.’
However, certain ChatGPT content with plagiarism below 10% can be used as there will be certain quotes, citations, and references that are common and unchangeable. Personally, I believe that the ChatGPT plagiarism score won’t cross more than 20%.
How Does ChatGPT Create Plagiarism-Free Content?
ChatGPT has more than 100 million active users every day! Therefore, ChatGPT has to be clever in producing 10 million different types of content for the same prompt. The generated content should also be unique and concise.
ChatGPT (Chat Generative pre-trained transformer) employs a unique approach called Reinforced Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), producing its own content by referring to thousands of other data. Therefore, unlike other chatbots that copy, paste, or rephrase context, ChatGPT creates responses similar to human language!
Therefore, when we consider plagiarism as paraphrasing, restructuring, copying, and pasting, we can’t claim ChatGPT content as plagiarized because it isn’t involved in these activities.
However, it’s not advisable to completely rely upon ChatGPT for authentic content. Users must check for its authenticity and plagiarism before publishing any AI-generated content.
Does ChatGPT Plagiarize Reddit?
No. ChatGPT does not plagiarize the Reddit content. Most AI models don’t browse the internet in real-time and don’t even have access to certain sources, citations, and websites, including Reddit. The Google guidelines don’t allow AI to retrieve any copy from them and rephrase it.
However, sometimes, the content from ChatGPT can resemble the content from any other source due to common phrases and patterns that trainers have fed during implementation.
Additionally, when publishing ChatGPT content, it is necessary to fact-check the updates, trends, and statistics because it is vulnerable to providing false information and out-of-date information.

Now, who doesn’t use ChatGPT if it makes their life easier? It’s not wrong to use tools that can help us. However, using a good plagiarism tool helps remove plagiarized content to prevent being flagged.

Sometimes, your plagiarism checker tool might detect plagiarism content because of the similar phrases used in the AI-generated content. Use a good tool to check it and edit the content.
You can use different words, synonyms, and analogies to express the ideas differently, thus decreasing the percentage of plagiarized content. Editing the content is an original and new art to the audience.
While editing, you can also add stats, facts, and data to prove your information. This makes your content more humanized and original for the tool and the reader.
